Lyn Mowles

We are pleased to announce the Oakey’s Hospice Caregivers Award winner for May 2016 is Lyn Mowles of Medi Home Health and Hospice.

“You’re freakin’ kidding me!” is what Lyn Mowles said when her name was announced as the recipient of Oakey’s May 2016 Hospice Caregivers Award.

The following is from Lyn’s nomination form sent in by one of her patients:
“In December 2015, I became deathly ill and was taken to the VA Emergency Room. They did a CT scan, x-rays, blood and urine work, etc. After all of the testing, the doctors said that they could not find anything except that I was in the end stages of COPD and congestive heart failure. My family and I were asked whether I wanted to go to a nursing facility, palliative care or hospice. This was shocking and caught us completely off guard. We decided that I would return home and receive hospice care from Medi Home Health and Hospice located on Peters Creek Rd. in Roanoke.

Lyn Mowles became my hospice nurse. I was as near death as one can be. I was bedridden, could not stand and could not communicate well. Lyn’s nursing skills brought me back to where I am today, 6 months later. I am able to walk with oxygen and get around outside on an electric scooter that Lyn helped acquire from the VA. She also ordered a portable oxygen concentrator that allows me to more easily drive myself to doctor appointments, use my scooter outside, leave the house and dine out once in a while. She helped give me some semblance of life again, which is priceless.

Lyn goes above and beyond providing care to her patients. An example of that is, she told me if it snowed, she would drive as close as she could to the house and then walk the rest of the way if needed. This is true dedication to her patients.

If I continue to improve, I will be released from hospice in June, 2016, something that the majority of hospice patients do not do. I feel that Lyn Mowles has made this possible. I strongly recommend her for your Oakey’s Hospice Caregivers Award. She most definitely deserves it! Thank you for considering her.”
Lyn was nominated for this award by her peers, friends and hospice families for her dedicated service to hospice patients and their families. Lyn was selected for the award by independent judges, Nelson Harris and Donna Hopkins Britt.
