Percy Eugene Moore, age 83, died Saturday, October 26, 2013. He was born February 1, 1930. A son of the late Percy G. and Grace Snider Moore. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Gail Hackworth Moore of Roanoke, VA, one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas (Tommy) E. and Natasha Moore of Hoboken, NJ. One daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Greg Austin of Roanoke, VA. Much loved grandchildren, Lance Thomas Bibbs and Hannah Elizabeth Bibbs of Roanoke, VA. One sister, JoAnn Moore Arthur of Huddleston, VA. Sister-in-law, Yvonne Hackworth Williams of Roanoke, VA. Uncle of Susan Williams of Roanoke, VA and nephew, Billy and Pam Williams and other nieces and nephews and special friends. Percy was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson Senior High School. He was employed at the American Theatre in Roanoke, VA for 26 years. After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he remained in the US Air Force Reserve for 29 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Percy was employed 36 years as a locomotive fireman and engineer on the Norfolk and Western Railway’s Roanoke Terminal. He retired after serving 8 years as General Chairman of the United Transportation Union-Enginemen. After a short retirement of 3 years he reentered the work force as a data entry operator with the US Postal Service, retiring again in April, 2002. Percy was a member of the Wildhurst Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA for over 54 years and was serving as an Elder and Vice Moderator of the Church Session, and Clerk of Session, and as a member of the Church Board of Trustees. He had previously served as Deacon, Church Treasurer and Congregational Chairman. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union Local 706, the US Postal Workers Union, Melrose Masonic Lodge No. 139, The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Kazim Shrine Temple and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club. Percy was also a member of The American Legion post No. 248, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1264, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Retired Enlisted Association. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey’s South Chapel on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at noon with the Pastor William Harris, Jr. officiating. Interment to follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 28, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 and also on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8.
